Almost always, 24 tributes in total participate in a battle royale to the death in each of the Hunger Games.

What are Tributes?

Children from the districts who take part in the Hunger Games are called tributes. 

Every year, 24 children between the ages of 12 and 18 are chosen for the Hunger Games.

Each district is mandated to provide one female and one male tribute for the annual Hunger Games. However, this rule may vary on special occasions. The 50th Hunger Games or The Second Quarter Quell, for instance, mandated each district to send twice the number of tributes as usual, thus bringing the total tribute count to 48. 

Tributes are meant to fight to the death in the arena of the Hunger Games where the winner will be crowned as the Victor.
